The UAE has hosted some outstanding concerts over the years, but from the moment that Coldplay announced that they would be bringing their Music of the Spheres World Tour to Abu Dhabi, there was never any doubt that the bar would be raised, and records would be smashed. With Coldplay fever sweeping through the UAE and beyond, what was initially billed as a one-off show soon grew into a four-night extravaganza with more than 200,000 fans descending on Abu Dhabi’s Zayed Sports City Stadium for by far the largest concert series the country has ever seen.
“As the largest concert series with a single artist ever held in the country, Coldplay’s performances marked an historic moment for live entertainment in the UAE, setting a new benchmark for what is possible in the region,” stated Live Nation Middle East President, James Craven, reflecting on the landmark series. “Beyond the record-breaking attendance, these shows created a cultural moment that will be remembered for years to come. Fans were not just spectators; they were part of something truly extraordinary, experiencing Coldplay’s legendary music and groundbreaking production in a way that was nothing short of unforgettable.”
Attending on the final night of the run, TPiMEA battled through the crowds of eager fans who were already amassing around the stadium well before doors to reach Coldplay’s Production Manager, Chris Kansy, who generously spared some time to chat and introduce a few key members of the hard-working and tight-knit touring team.
“Nothing in live touring is ever easy, but our experience here in Abu Dhabi has been nothing short of magical,” he shared. “I’m out on the floor and I see and hear the audience – the smiles, the tears and the whole crowd singing along to every word. This is a show for everyone and it’s amazing to see how well received it has been here.”
A vastly experienced PM having worked with the likes of Roger Waters, Tool, and Massive Attack to name just a few, Kansy has been with the Coldplay camp for a little over two years, and while there’s no doubt that it’s a large team, he prides himself on his approachability and ability to connect with everyone. “I already knew some of the crew before I arrived, and it’s a truly exceptional team full of hard workers who are super-talented,” he commented. “We have more than 160 people here with us in Abu Dhabi and that figure rises significantly when we’re in Europe and North America, but I try to sit with a different person in catering every night and learn at least a little bit about everyone.”
The longer TPiMEA spent with the team and the more people we were introduced to, the strong sense of camaraderie within the Coldplay camp became increasingly clear, with the tone very much set by the band. “We work for a great band who are generous, kind, and understanding, and management carry the same ethos,” Kansy beamed. “There’s always a great energy among the team and when the band shows up for soundcheck, the energy rises even more. It’s a wonderful atmosphere and a great gig to be on.”
